Techno music emerged in Detroit during the 1980s, spearheaded by the « Belleville Three »: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. They forged a distinct, machine-driven sound, blending various electronic and soulful influences.
Juan Atkins and The Third Wave
The credit for the name « Techno » primarily goes to Juan Atkins, often hailed as the « Godfather of Techno. » Atkins found profound inspiration in Alvin Toffler’s 1980 book, « The Third Wave. » Toffler’s concept of « techno rebels » resonated with Atkins’ vision for a futuristic, technologically advanced electronic music. His early group, Cybotron, even used « techno-pop. » Ultimately, « techno » became the concise, powerful descriptor for this evolving sound, highlighting its synthetic, machine-driven nature and forward-looking ethos within the electronic music landscape.
